NUSOJ welcomes the release of journalists’ leader

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) has welcomed the release of the Vice President of the union, Abdi Adan Guled, but has condemned the unjust period he has endured in prison.

Abdi Adan Guled who is also the Editor-in-Chief of Xog Ogaal Daily newspaper was released this evening without any charges leveled against him. He was arrested on 15 October 2016 by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) who also confiscated materials, equipment and archives of the newspaper.

“I have regained my freedom this evening. I am exhausted and I want to refrain from making any comments for the sake of my colleagues. I want to thank the team at our newspaper, my union colleagues, IFJ and international community who all stood up for my release,” said Abdi Adan Guled in speaking to officials of NUSOJ.

“We welcome the release of our colleague Abdi Adan Guled and we join his family and colleagues at Xog Ogaal to celebrate this wonderful news,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. “But he should not have been arrested in the first place. He committed no crime and his imprisonment was entirely unjust.”

NUSOJ censures the way government agents surrounded by soldiers tried to take pictures of the exhausted Abdi Adan Guled in order to spread a cheap propaganda for those who have worked to take out Guled’s freedom.

NISA informed Guled that Xog-Ogaal newspaper will receive its confiscated materials and equipment tomorrow.
