On 12 April 2025, Abukar Sheikh Mohamud, Director of Shabelle Media Network, was arbitrarily arrested by Somali Federal Police at Hamarweyne Police Station in Mogadishu. He was not under investigation; he had simply accompanied his Deputy Director, Mohamud Abdinasir Soofeysane, who had been summoned for questioning. Upon arrival, Abukar was briefly questioned and then detained. He was not shown an arrest warrant, not informed of any charges and no legal basis was provided. His arrest was carried out without due process. This unjust action appears aimed at intimidating independent media. It raises serious concerns about the misuse of police power to silence press freedom in Somalia.
