On 28 April 2025, four Somali journalists were arrested by Somali police while on professional assignment in the Wadajir district of Mogadishu, Banadir region. The journalists were reportedly obstructed from carrying out their duties, subjected to harassment, and detained without formal charges at the Wadajir District Police Station. Although no official explanation has been provided, the detentions appear to be related to their reporting activities. This incident highlights the persistent challenges and risks faced by journalists in Somalia, where press freedom remains under pressure and legal protections for media professionals are often inadequately enforced.
The detained journalists are:
Abuukar Maxamed Keynaan – Reporter, Risaala TV
Cabdirashiid Cadow Ibraahim – Cameraman, Risaala TV
Bashiir Cali Shire – Journalist, MM Somali TV
