On 23 May 2025, Ali Maalin Nor, a reporter for Horn Cable TV based in Galkayo, was detained by Galmudug security forces following orders from Mudug regional Governor Abdinasir Abdikadir Abdulle. The arrest took place in Galkayo, located in central Somalia’s Mudug region.
Ali was taken into custody after covering the Ministry of Finance’s decision to impose additional customs fees in Galmudug State. These new charges led to severe traffic jams and hindered vehicle movement throughout the region.
His report aimed to highlight how the extra fees affected everyday life and local transportation. Ali was held for 24 hours before being released on 24 May 2025. This case underscores the challenges journalists face when reporting on governance issues that impact communities.
