On the morning of 29 April 2025, four journalists were detained by police officers in Deyniile District, Mogadishu, while covering a public protest and a police home raid targeting local residents. The journalists—Shukri Aabi Abdi, Dek Mo’llim Jinow, Hussein Makaran and Najib Farah Mohamed—had arrived to report on the events and conduct interviews with affected community members. Shortly after they began their coverage, officers from the Deyniile District Police arrested them without charge and detained them at the district police station from approximately 09:00 AM to 01:00 PM. During their detention, Officer Liibaan Shidane forcibly deleted all video footage and interviews recorded during the protest. He also attempted to prevent the journalists from reclaiming their professional equipment, including cameras. However, another officer, Yasin Ganey, rejected this move and allowed the journalists to take their belongings, provided that the protest footage had already been deleted.

The journalists represent the following media outlets:

Shukri Aabi Abdi – Shabelle Media Network (Female)
Dek Mo’llim Jinow – Saab TV                          (Male)
Hussein Makaran – Hiiraanweyne TV          (Male)
Najib Farah Mohamed – Saab TV        (Male)

This incident raises serious concerns regarding the safety of journalists and freedom of the press in Somalia, as it involved arbitrary detention, destruction of news material and obstruction of lawful media work.
