On 24th August, Somali police detained three journalists in Mogadishu, Hussein Isse Mohamed of SMS TV, Osman Abdullahi Mohamed (SMS TV cameraman) and Mahad Mohamed Abdirahman of Daash TV while they were carrying out their journalistic duties. The incident occurred at around 5:00 PM outside the SMS TV headquarters in Mogadishu.
The journalists involved covering a dispute over the confiscation of public land, specifically focusing on the controversial Siinaay Public land issue, which has sparked huge tension between local residents and government security forces. After journalists completing their report, they were brought at SMS TV headquarters by a Member of Parliament, who involved protesting the land confiscation. As soon as their arrival, they were immediately arrested by police forces. CCTV footage, which later circulated on social media, shows some officers in plain clothes escorting the journalists to a waiting police vehicle outside the headquarter. According to Hassan Sheikh Ahmed Adde, the Director of SMS TV, indicated that the arrests were ordered by Banadir Police Commissioner Moallim Mahdi.
Mahad Mohamed was released that same evening, while Hussein Isse Mohamed and Osman Abdullahi Mohamed remained in custody at the Hamar Jajab district police station for a second night. Their equipment was also seized during the arrest. The two detained journalists were eventually released on the condition that they cease reporting on land grabbing issues.
