On Tuesday, 25 March 2025, Dalmar Isseh Ahmed, an independent journalist, was abducted and assaulted by Puntland security forces at the Uunlaaye Hotel in Galkayo, Mudug, Central Somalia around 11:30 PM. The attack occurred while Dalmar was reporting on NIRA’s national identification card issuance in Galkayo. Prior to the assault, he had faced threats from local officials, including the Mudug region governor and senior police officers. Officers from the unit defending Colonel Mahamud Abdihakim Yusuf, the Puntland Police Commander, ambushed him, firing gunshots to intimidate journalists and bystanders. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of journalists in Puntland, Somalia.
