On Friday, 21 November 2025, journalist Abdullahi Mohamed Ali (Saawey), a cameraman at Himilo TV, was unlawfully arrested by police forces in Yaaqshiid District, Mogadishu, while covering a community protest against a planned forced eviction and land grabbing. During the protest, police fired live bullets to disperse demonstrators, resulting in the death of one civilian. Abdullahi was initially detained at a local police post called “Heegan Section” before being transferred to Yaaqshiid District Police Station, where he remained in custody until Monday, 24 November, without access to his family.
On 22 November, Abdullahi was forcibly interrogated without legal representation, and his phone and passwords were confiscated by police prosecutor Nuraadin Mohamed Hussein (Jimale). On 24 November, he was arraigned before the Banaadir Regional Court on charges of “mobilising protestors” and “inciting the public.” The presiding judge dismissed the case due to lack of evidence. Despite the dismissal, Himilo Media’s equipment including a digital camera, microphones, tripod and lighting gear remains confiscated under the instructions of the Banaadir Police Commander. According to Abdullahi, he spent four days in custody without formal charges, and was formally released by police on 25 November 2025 after authorities failed to produce any evidence to support the accusations against him.
