On 14th July 2026, independent journalist Mohamed Jama Mohamud was arrested at approximately 8:30 a.m. in Bosaso, Bari Region, Puntland State of Somalia, by officials of the Puntland Intelligence Service (PISA). He was taken to the PISA headquarters in Bosaso, where he remained in detention. No official reason has been provided for his arrest, despite efforts to obtain information from the authorities. His detention has raised concerns about due process, transparency and the protection of journalists carrying out their professional duties.

Information gathered by NUSOJ indicates that his arrest followed his reporting on protests by Bosaso traders, who suspended their business activities in opposition to additional taxes imposed on goods imported through the Port of Bosaso.  The continued detention of journalists in connection with their reporting reflects growing pressure on independent media in Puntland and raises serious concerns about respect for freedom of expression and media freedom. Mohamed Jama Mohamud was later released from detention on 18th July 2026.
