On 29 November, authorities in Marka city, ordered the closure of MarkaFM, a private radio station. The action, reportedly taken by District Commissioner Osman Muse Mohamed, came after the station reported on an armed clash in the city, according to MarkaFM’s Director, Ahmed Omar Nor.
The gunfight involved forces loyal to the District Commissioner and those linked to the local leadership of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). The clash was reportedly connected to a dispute over fees collected during the registration of national IDs for the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA). MarkaFM’s coverage of the incident was cited as the reason for its temporary shutdown. The station resumed regular broadcasts on 8 December, according to Ahmed Omar Nor.
