On 12 April 2025, Mohamud Abdinasir Soofeysane, the Deputy Director of Shabelle Media Network, was arrested by Somali Federal Police at Hamarweyne Police Station in Mogadishu after voluntarily responding to a police summons. The summons was issued in relation to an interview he conducted with the leader of an opposition political party who had publicly criticised the government. Upon presenting himself at the station, Soofeysane was immediately detained without being informed of any charges, without a warrant and without due process. His arrest appears to be directly connected to his journalistic activity and reflects an ongoing campaign to restrict freedom of expression and silence dissenting media voices in Somalia.
