On 6 April 2024, Mohamud Abdirashid Moallim, widely known as Boodboode, has been unlawfully detained in Luuq district, Gedo region, Somalia. He was arrested by local intelligence agents acting on the orders of District Commissioner Dahir Muhumad Nur, reportedly following a tip-off from Ethiopian forces. The arrest occurred after Moallim returned from visiting relatives in Washaqo, a town near the Ethiopian border, an area partly controlled by Al Shabab. Authorities accuse him of “suspicious activities” for allegedly recording Ethiopian military movements, though no evidence has been provided. This is not his first detention—he was previously arrested on 24 February for reporting on police brutality. His case highlights the increasingly dangerous and repressive environment for journalists in Somalia, where independent reporting is often met with intimidation, threats and unlawful arrests.
