On 25 June 2026, journalist Abdulkadir Abukar Ali (Diirshe) of Somali Stream was arbitrarily detained by officers of the Somali Police Force (SPF) outside the Banadir Regional Court in Mogadishu, Banaadir Region, while on his way to cover court proceedings as part of his professional journalistic duties. According to reports from his media outlet Somali stream, the arrest occurred at approximately 8:46 a.m., as he was preparing to report on the court session.
Following his arrest, the journalist was transferred to Banadir Regional Police units and subsequently held at Yaqshid District Police Station. During his detention, he was reportedly denied communication with his family and relatives were not permitted to visit him, raising concerns regarding his treatment in custody and respect for his fundamental rights.
On 28 June 2026, the journalist was released from detention. However, his release was temporary rather than permanent and does not indicate that the matter has been resolved.
