On 20th July 2026, journalist Shu’ayb Daad Mohamed of Sahal Cable Tv was arrested at approximately 7:30 a.m. in Bosaso, Bari Region, Puntland State of Somalia, by officers of the Puntland Intelligence Service Agency (PISA). He was detained at Bosaso Airport while accompanying a family member who was departing on a flight. The journalist was subsequently taken into custody, but the authorities failed to provide any official justification for his arrest. Efforts by NUSOJ representatives in Puntland to obtain clarification from PISA were unsuccessful, as officials refused to disclose the grounds for his detention.

According to information documented by NUSOJ, Shu’ayb’s arrest is linked to his journalistic coverage of the ongoing dispute between Bosaso traders and the Puntland administration over the suspension of commercial activities in protest against newly introduced taxes and increased port charges on imported goods passing through the Port of Bosaso. A journalist of Sahal Cable TV, Shu’ayb’s detention occurred amid a worsening climate for press freedom in Puntland state, where arrests of media professionals have become increasingly frequent. His case marked the third detention of a journalist recorded since 2nd July 2026, underscoring growing concerns over the targeting of journalists for carrying out their professional responsibilities. Shu’ayb Daad Mohamed was released from detention on 24th July 2026 after spending four days in custody.
