On 9 September, journalist Suweys Gacayte Ali, a female journalist working in Garowe, capital city of Puntland was also summoned by the Attorney General’s office. She was accused of posting contents on her Facebook page, including posts and videos that authorities were said to undermine the reputation of Puntland state of Somalia.
Journalist Suweys was called by the Attorney General on September 9, 2025, the same day as journalist Hassan Haykal. Suweys was questioned about her journalistic work and she was informed that the court would summon her again later.
NUSOJ, which contacted the Office of the Minister of Information of Puntland, inquired about why journalists were being targeted. Minister Mahamoud Aydid Dirir responded to the issue, stating that they had initiated this legal proceedings and were following the law against the journalist.
“We are the ones filing the case; we are following the law. We did not send soldiers and we have not arrested anyone or any journalist. We are only pursuing a legal case. If they have something to defend, let them do it in the courts,” said the Minister of Information of Puntland in a conversation with NUSOJ.
