On 25th February 2025, three journalists — Sa’ed Ali Osman, Ayanle Egeh Du’ale, and Abdiasis Saleban Sulub — were arrested in Burao, Togdheer region, after airing edited footage of a speech made by the regional governor. Authorities claimed the footage misrepresented the governor’s remarks and could potentially mislead the public.
The arrest drew concern from press freedom advocates, citing growing pressure on journalists in the region.
All three journalists were held detention for 2 days (48 hours) without formal charges.
They were released on 27 February, following calls for their immediate release. Officials have not yet to explain what part of the footage led to the arrest.
