On 17 December 2024, journalist Shukri Aabi Abdi of Risaala TV was violently assaulted by plainclothes officers of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) while reporting on a peaceful protest at Daljirka Dahsoon, Bondhere District in Mogadishu. The protest involved residents opposing the demolition of their homes. Shukri was interviewing civilians when NISA officers attacked her without warning, beating her with batons and causing serious injuries to her head, neck, arms and other parts of her body. Her cameraman, Ali Hassan Gure, was detained for three hours in a secret detention facility. Following the assault, NISA officials attempted to resolve the matter privately by offering a verbal apology, which Shukri firmly rejected. This incident reflects the increasing dangers faced by journalists in Somalia, where intimidation, violence and lack of accountability remain major challenges to press freedom and the ability of media professionals to carry out their work safely.
