On Saturday, 27 September, Mohamed Abdi Omar Ismail (Wadiin), a local independent journalist from Gabiley, was arrested by Somaliland police following his report on the detention of clan elders in Wajale town by the Somaliland authorities. These elders had recently voiced strong opposition to the government’s decision to seize land in Wajale. Wadiin, who mainly shares his reports on his Facebook page, which has over 100,000 followers, was taken into custody. Journalists in Gabiley informed the press that he remained in detention for two days without an arrest warrant or formal charges, despite the Somaliland constitution prohibiting arrests without charges due process.
