On Thursday, 11 September 2025, three journalists from respected media outlets were briefly detained and subjected to threats by the Somaliland Police Forces in Borama, Awdal region. The incident occurred after the Awdal governor expressed his anger over the local reporters’ critical coverage of his actions, particularly during President Irro’s recent visit to Borama. The detained journalists later confirmed that the arrest ordered by the governor of Awdal region, Somaliland.
The detained journalists represented the following media outlets:
Horn Cable TV:
1. Ahmed Sheikh Muse Hassan – Reporter
CBA TV:
2. Abdirisaq Omar Me’ad – Reporter

This troubling event stands in stark contrast to the promises made by President Irro during his election campaign, where he committed to upholding media freedom in Somaliland. Despite these assurances, the situation has deteriorated, with incidents of press suppression becoming more frequent and severe than under the previous administration. This attack is part of an alarming trend of growing media repression.
